Geothermal Systems for Heating and Cooling
Geothermal heating and cooling systems are considered the most efficient ways to heat and cool homes by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In North Carolina and South Carolina, geothermal systems can make a big difference in how comfortable your home is, especially during the hot summers. Traditional heat pumps and air conditioning units change the temperature of the outdoor air, which can be much hotter or colder than you would like your house to be. Geothermal HVAC systems (sometimes known as ground source heat pumps) take advantage of stable below ground temperatures so they don’t have to work as hard to heat or cool your home. If you’ve ever been in a basement or visited a cave, you’ve felt the effects of the stable below-ground temperatures. Geothermal heating and cooling systems bring that same comfort to your entire home, whether temperatures are in the 90’s or below freezing.
- Up to 70% more efficient than traditional furnaces and air conditioners.
- Can cut your energy bills by as much as 70%. Visit our Savings Calculator to see how much you could save with geothermal.
- Quiet Operation – similar noise as a refrigerator when running.
- Can provide low-cost water heating.
- Safety. The systems emit no deadly carbon monoxide gas.
- Reduce your carbon footprint.

How geothermal heating and cooling works
Geothermal systems can be considered a way to harness solar energy that is stored in the ground. Geothermal systems use an underground pipe system, called a loop, to tap into the near constant temperature underground, instead of trying to heat or cool the extreme temperatures found in the air. Tax Credits available
Federal tax credits of up to 30% are available through 2021. In South Carolina, a state tax credit of 25% is available through 2018. Visit our Tax Credits page to learn more.
